At least that’s what it says on my business card, but I’m not sure a small paper rectangle can really define anybody. I like to say I’m a creative thinker and tinkerer. I’m a maker and a doer. But traditionally speaking I can lead clients through the branding process and believe a logo should tell a tiny, two second story. I plan, prototype and design websites for clients large and small. I also storyboard, script, shoot and edit video content and have even been known to sit in front of the camera every once in a while. I’m still passionate about print design such as collateral and brochures, but understand that things are moving away from that. I have a somewhat annoying eye for detail. I have a deep seated attachment to margins, grids and guides. I use that preciseness in everything I do.
I’ve built up a reputation as a creative handyman of sorts. You see Rattleback shifted focus every five or so years, and so I’ve had to adapt every step of the way. What started as your standard late 90’s design studio turned into an advertising agency and then a branding company and finally a content marketing firm. And with that my experience and dedication to take national clients on their creative journey only gained speed, momentum and strength. I’ve seemingly seen and done it all. But I know that is not true and am excited for whatever lies next.
On the flip side, I build furniture and renovate houses. I work with my hands, but know when to be hands off. Like Adam Savage, I believe every tool is a hammer. I write when I can and sing in my car (poorly). I play guitar (also poorly) and listen to music at all hours of the day. It keeps me grounded, but Christmas music puts my head in the clouds. If I could truly levitate, I would sell lots of tickets and maybe do an interview with Trevor Noah while floating. I’m an honorary member of the Dharma Initiative and an aspiring Jedi. I play video games in my basement, but I definitely do not live with my mother.
But above it all, I just like to say I’m creative* and truly believe everybody is in some way shape or form. Just as I believe everything listed above takes some amount of creativity. I live it. I breathe it. I need it.
I am currently employed at Rattleback. And have been (wait for it) for the past 20 years. Seriously. That's unheard of in this day and age. But it's an awesome agency with awesome leadership in a super sweet building. I wouldn't be the creative director I am if it wasn't for the long line of artists that came before me and worked on my team over the past two decades. I am forever grateful for the opportunity and the freedom I have day in, day out. It's my home away from home. Maybe it could be yours, as well?
*I stand by my incorrect usage of this word. I know it is an adjective and frankly I do not care. Times change. People change. Words change. For me, the use of the word "creative" has changed.
